Planning Project Award — California Chapter of the American Planning Association (2009)
Located in the heart of Rancho Cordova, Capital Village is an eclectic, urban-themed master planned community comprising a mix of land uses, housing types and landscape treatments. The HLA Group was tasked with developing the overall community theming, design of the entry monuments, streetscapes, parks, open spaces, production and model landscapes. The design intent was to express variety in form, color, scale and material, and promote placemaking with enhanced transitions between public and private spaces. The result is a vibrant, walkable community with a variety of pedestrian amenities, unique street scene and varied user amenities.
There are a total of three parks within the Capital Village development. The Village Green is the largest at 3.7 acres and features an iconic 60-foot tall tower and community event plaza. Renaissance Park is a 1.9-acre neighborhood park punctuated by a centrally-located, tree-lined grassy space that is complemented by a shaded picnic area and playground. Lastly, Cobblestone Park, is a 1.7-acre neighborhood park that serves the recreational needs of the residents living in the southern portion of the development. This park features a covered group picnic area and playground.
