The HLA Group created the conceptual design, master plan and construction documents for a fully integrated intermodal facility which is the largest of seven new sites for the southern extension of light rail. A circulation master plan for the 11-acre site redirects existing bus routes into the transit center. A pedestrian spine lined with palm trees connects the commuter parking area to a multilevel platform and plaza space, which is served by a separate drop-off area. The entire light rail station and parking area are designed to maximize security for riders and their parked cars. To reduce urban runoff, storm water is retained on site and cleaned by bioswales located throughout the site. Art installations, commissioned through the Art in Public Places program in collaboration with Luther Burbank High School, occur throughout the transit stations and contribute to creating a fresh neighborhood identity in an older part of town.
