Representing the great California landscape icons from the rugged coastline to the monumental redwoods forests and mountain ranges, the entry plaza for the CalEPA Headquarters creates a public space that reflects the function of the agency. As the landscape architect of record, The HLA Group developed and used a California native plant palette that would both represent California’s various plant communities and thrive in Sacramento’s vigorous climate. An important goal of the landscape design was to blend the building, which occupies an entire city block, into the downtown streetscape in a way that reinforces the city grid while providing human scale against the high rise building.
