Award of Excellence Public Spaces & Linkages — California Redevelopment Association (2002) Award of Merit — California Park & Recreation Society (2000) River Walk Park is a bustling landscape corridor along the Sacramento River’s urban core/waterfront interface in West Sacramento. The design establishes a sophisticated image for a site earmarked for prime commercial and residential development; provides public access to the Sacramento River with numerous active/passive open space areas, including outdoor gathering places for civic and cultural events; restores riparian habitat along a river bank that suffered significant degradation; and strengthens the existing levee. The corridor includes a central promenade and grand staircase atop the levee, flexible open space for events, Veterans Plaza, and Raley’s Landing Boat Dock. The efforts of The HLA Group included extensive coordination with the State Lands Commission, Department of Boating and Waterways, Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Bureau of Land Management. The development of River Walk Park was the catalyst for development along the Sacramento River and represents an import civic amenity and public space for the broader Sacramento region.
