2002 Award of Excellence Public Spaces & Linkages — California Redevelopment Association 2000 Award of Merit — California Park & Recreation Society River Walk Park is a bustling landscape corridor along the Sacramento River’s urban core/waterfront interface in West Sacramento. Its design goals were numerous yet simple: establish a sophisticated image for a site earmarked for prime commercial and residential development; provide free public access to the Sacramento River; provide a variety of active and passive open space areas, including an outdoor gathering place for civic and cultural events; restore riparian habitat along a river bank that has suffered significant degradation; and strengthen the existing levee while maintaining access for emergency flood control vehicles. All design objectives were achieved, and expectations were surpassed. The corridor features picnic tables, walking and biking trails, a grand staircase, promenade atop the levee, flexible open space for events and programming, Veterans Plaza and Raley’s Landing - all accessible by wheelchair. Through the meticulous efforts of The HLA Group and extensive coordination with the State Lands Commission, the Department of Boating and Waterways, Department of Fish and Game, Army Corps of Engineers, and the Bureau of Reclamation, River Walk Park has become the invaluable asset it is today.
